Patulin and chlorpyrifos - cumulative toxicological effect
A 2019 study has investigated the combined effects of the mycotoxin patulin and the pesticide chlorpyrifos, both of which are liver-damaging and often co-occur on crops.

The results show that the two substances act synergistically - both in vivo and in vitro experiments confirm that they cause significantly greater cellular and liver damage.

These findings confirm that it is worthwhile to consider testing several active substances from the same sample during monitoring studies and, where such data are available, to consider their combined toxicological effects during food safety studies and risk assessments.

The case is not an emerging risk under our procedures, but may be relevant to the authority and the professional community.
